I lived with Zhang Xueliang for 25 years of his house arrest from ages 5-30 (1937 - 1962). Over these 25 years, he told me many stories, and we lived through many stories that I will share with my readers in my book and in this blog.
Zhang Xueliang is a hero according to the Chinese Communist Party for his role in the Xi'an Incident where Chiang Kai-Shek, the ruling leader at the time, was kidnapped and forced to unite with the Communists to fight the Japanese. As a result of the Xi'an Incident, Zhang Xueliang was put under house arrest by Chiang Kai-Shek where he was guarded by my father, General Liu Yiguang (刘乙光) for 25 years. This is the story of Zhang Xueliang first 25 years of house arrest, based on my experiences with him from ages 5-30 (1937-1962).
Immediately after the Xi'an Incident, Zhang Xueliang freed Chiang Kai-shek and his wife after Mr. Chiang was forced to agree to a truce with the Communists. On December 25, 1936, Zhang Xueliang flew Chiang Kai-shek and his wife from Xi'an to Luoyang, Henan. On December 26, Zhang Xueliang sent a plane to take Chiang Kai-shek and his wife from to Nanjing from Luoyang, where Mr. and Mrs. Chiang were met with a royal welcome. 30 minutes after the Chiang's flight took off, Zhang Xueliang boarded a second airplane with his staff, guards and luggage (that filled half of the plane) to fly from Luoyang to Nanjing. My father Liu Yiguang (刘乙光) and his team of 11 special agents met Zhang Xueliang's airplane in Nanjing, and took him and his party to a guest house.
After a trial for his role in the Xi'an Incident, Mr. Zhang was sentenced to 10 years in prison, which was commuted by Chiang Kai-shek to house arrest. Mr father was assigned to control Zhang Xueliang during the first 25 years of his house arrest. My father lived and ate with Mr. Zhang and Miss Four (his mistress) every day. Occasionally, while in China, Mr. Zhang would invite our entire family to eat with him. He would eat quickly and then talk, very loudly, while everyone else finished their meals and listened. While in Taiwan, for 11 years, our family lived and ate under the same roof with Mr. Zhang. The rest of the 25 years, our family always lived nearby during the school year and would go live at Mr. Zhang's place during all school breaks.
During these 25 years, Mr. Zhang liked to tell the story and legend of his father Zhang Zuolin and his own stories before the Xi'an Incident. (He NEVER mentioned the Xi'an Incident). I have heard these stories so many times between ages 5-30, that I have memorized them. Based on my his many stories and my personal experience with him, this book and blog will be about the 25 years of house arrest of Zhang Xueliang, the man who saved the Communists and changed Chinese history.
